A Juneteenth Poem by Shalisha Cook

My black is beautiful                                                                                                                           My black is beautiful                                                                                                                           My black is… Beauty Full

My black is the emancipation of a generation scorned from violence used to silence my people  See, color becomes the permanent label                                                                                             If you are black, then you are unstable, incapable, and unsaveable                                                You are put in a box with a check which translates into the only income you will spend from Because government assistance is what the government insists that you and I will ever insist upon.                                                                                                                                               Black identity is met with resistance, immorality, and brutality so powerful that a black life is equivalent to a hash tag

My black is beautiful                                                                                                                           My black is beautiful                                                                                                                           My black is… Beauty Full

My black is the representation of unspoken royalty, which transcends ten lifetimes                    See, I walk with a presence powerful enough to change a negative distortion into a stream of prosperity                                                                                                                                       When my mouth opens, the venom so poisonous it’ll conjure lucid dreams                                       I am the Goddess from up high cause No racist rapist ever had the power to silence me
