men

men

men

A Poem by Emma Roehrig

i have learned that when a man

wants to be right, he is.

even if you have to put a door stop

under your tongue to halt

your defense, making yourself

less so he can become

more-

selling your words to his ego,

selling your heart for his ever-heroic cause.

i have learned that when a man

wants to be loved, he will squeeze

his surroundings until

only the pulp of resentment is left,

and he will drink the juice as if

he were invited for tea.

i have learned that a man’s way

of asking for validation

is ultimately through violence.
