My Black Dog

My Black Dog

A Poem by Simon Williams

A black dog has been following me around

For the past few weeks

People ask me what breed it is and is it friendly

And I say actually it isn’t really a dog

Then they ask me what’s its name

And I say no really it isn’t a dog it's how I feel

And they say yes but it must have a name

Some of them pat it and one even gave it a biscuit

And I say please don't feed it, it isn't really a dog

It's a physical manifestation of negative emotions

And they say that's a funny name for a dog

And ask me if it's microchipped

And I give up and retreat into sullen silence

And the fucking dog just keeps getting bigger
