Offering to a Deity
Offerings to a Deity
A Visual Art Series by Julia Justo
My work is a rethinking of the traditional altars that I used to see in Argentina while I was growing up.
Transgender and gender non-conforming people face rampant discrimination in health care settings, are regularly denied needed care, and experience a range of health risks because they are transgender or gender non-conforming, according to a report of more than 6,450 transgender and gender non-conforming people.
My ongoing project “Offering to a Deity” explores the ritual of the Altar as a manifestation of losing one’s loved ones.
My work examines the love of family and friends in the face of segregation against transgender people.
Although the photographs do not portray people that lost their lives, they illustrate the ever present possibility of loss to systemic discrimination in health care settings.
“Offering to a Deity” aims to build a platform to discuss the inhumane treatment of transgender people, elevate the voices of those affected by discrimination and create space to collectively envision a path forward.
