Facts About Porcupines

A Poem by Alison Landes

newspaper makes a good blanket

if no one will talk to you

but

even paper can make you bleed

if you press it to lick

your wounds.

I hear breastmilk heals and

I think if I could bathe in it I might

feel like somebody.

if I could press each of you to my breast,

let you drink of me,

we might love each other.

but I remember seeing two porcupines

huddling close for warmth,

poking holes in each other all the while.

mama said to leave if he hits me

but what if he pokes holes in me

over breakfast?

I don't want to be somebody’s colander

so I will be a vacuum, all dressed up

and nowhere to stay.
